Someone once told me that there is a difference between happiness and joy.

Happiness is connected to external things.

Ex. This hot pink bag brings me happiness.

Joy, on the other hand, is something within, that no person, place or thing can take away.

Ex. Despite being devastated and utterly sad for missing her kids, Denise can smile with joy in her heart knowing that she committed to loving herself from this day on.
